Artist Statement: These five photo collages were created based on walks I had taken over the course of this year. The photos in them were captured during walks I have taken while exploring different edgelands. From paths in the woods, to pioneer graveyards and along Lake Ontario I enjoyed picturing each place through my lens because it provided me an opportunity to visually reconstruct each enjoyable experience.
Placing the photos in frames and applying a thin layer of acrylic to obscure them symbolizes how we have distanced ourselves from nature. I think it is important that we attempt to stay connected to nature and practice travelling off beaten paths. In my experience, traveling paths not well known to us can provide inner peace in a time when we may have many worrying concerns.
Included in the photos of places in which I walked are images of bugs and fungi because it is also important to appreciate that many forms of life go on unaware of human circumstances. I find it is easy to disregard this aspect of life and nature. It is only after I actively go out to search for and act as a witness to these scenes in person that I remember I am a part of something larger. The dried flowers and petals affixed to the frames, help me re-imagine my walks as more than just a two-dimensional experience.
