Artist Statement: This global pandemic has isolated us in a way that some would describe as apocalyptic. Walking down empty sidewalks and crossing empty roads during the earlier stages of lockdown was disconcerting. While we sat at home, the edgelands that border these places had significantly grown over. My mind imagined surreal scenes at the thought of such places even existing during the times we’re in now. Seeing the barren streets and feeling an odd sense of silence despite being surrounded by people stuck at home, the idea of a world that we were no longer part of fascinates me. It is a world that doesn’t make sense; a world that looks ready to collapse.
While we all like to escape into mystical realms and fantasy worlds, remembering the real world and its value has become more vital. Equally important is to realize that the natural world moves whether we are ready or not: a cruel bit of reality that cannot be stopped. The five illustrations are rendered in a simplistic style using solid colours. Each scene is a separate location with none of them correlating to the other except that each reflects societies impact on the environment. To illustrate this impact, a hidden fragment can be found in each of one of the other five illustrations.
