Artist Statement: I am afraid to stray into nature's domain. The fear stems from the unknown—how could I know what lurks beyond the edge of familiar paths? How could I trespass into the realm of wild plants and animals, unaware of what they might do to protect themselves? And what if I encounter another person there?
We have been told there is magic in nature. A part of me wants to journey to find the magic, but how can I know what that magic holds?
At the junctions between streets or sidewalks and edglands, between familiarity and what is unknown, where does personal comfort end and discomfort begin? When do we let go of what is known and begin to simply experience new experience?
The characters in these illustrations represents this desire to journey into nature, or edgelands and uncover the unknown. They are not afraid of what they cannot see or what lies beyond the border of trees and foliage. They are portrayed as seeking, exploring, and experiencing the magic that could be hidden there. They actively seek knowledge, but are concerned about the burden of knowing how to use the knowledge they have sought.
