Artist Statement: There are always hidden gems to be found in places that can be considered to have no purpose at all. In my drawings I hoped to convey how some of these places can hold significant meaning, even though they are of abandoned structures and buildings. The monotone color scheme symbolizes the run-down, eerie, and even unsettling characteristics of these places. The contrasting colour shapes symbolize how memories possibly attached to the structures and buildings can still live on despite the absence of people.
Each of these abandoned places can be found around the Greater Toronto Area where millions of people live. Because of the pandemic and lockdowns, I am not able to go to where other people are, but I am permitted to go to places and take pictures of where the people cannot be found. This idea of being quarantined allowed me to connect with those places and see them as more than merely abandoned and forgotten.
