Artist Statement: Edgelands, the landscapes that build off of our environment—the wooded and shrub filled areas that surround our creeks and streams. Walking through these areas has become increasingly important and I wanted to capture their beauty: the ocean back home in Nova Scotia; the river that my house backs onto; and a small creek down the road.

Walking and being inspired by edgelands, I wanted to show how peaceful and beautiful these areas can be. It also shows the smaller spaces that exist within our neighbourhoods—the small trees and shrubs along sidewalks and the tiny weeds that grow through cracks in the pavement. There is beauty all around us, and not just seen in plants and trees, but also the animals you can find there: geese and squirrels, birds on a bird feeder.

My aim in making this video is to show that you don’t need to live in a beautiful neighbourhood or in the country, or on a few acres of land to be able to find these pastoral scenes. You can go for a short walk down the sidewalk and find something beautiful. It is a matter of how you choose to look at the world around you
