Artist Statement: Did you ever imagine if an edgeland looked like a human how it would appear? Would it look like Te Fiti from the Disney film Moana which appeared so beautiful and Majestic?
While thinking about edglands and what they might look like in human form, I began to make characters partly inspired by my older sisters. Each with qualities I recognized in them as a child, or that I heard about them while growing up.
Taking my thinking further, I started to create new characters: a frog, bear, water, and two trees inspired by environments, or edgelands near me. The frog is based on the frogs and tadpoles from a pond next to my house. The bear is based on an actual bear that came out of the woods located directly across the street from my home and that walked along the sidewalk in broad daylight. The water character represents an even bigger, polluted pond near a park I used to walk in. The two trees represent a forest I used to walk in during the winter; one year it was strung up with caution tape across trunks with massive chips and chunks missing in the bark. There are always qualities and characteristics that can be assigned to the world around us.
