Artist Statement: ‘Scale of Extinction’ is a series of diptych photographs exploring the concept of the extinction of the edgelands and questions their overall importance in relation to scale. Using toy dinosaur figurines as a point of reference, the series looks at the majestic beauty of the edgelands through one perspective and the way in which human activity has changed the natural environment through a second perspective.
Exploring various edgelands on the borders of the Durham Region, from the lake, to farmlands and various trails throughout the region each dinosaur figurine was shot in two scales. First, up close creating the dinosaur as the subject of the photograph; highlighting the importance of preserving nature. Second, a few steps back showing the way in which humans have utilized the area for their own enjoyment, regardless of the impact. The scale of the dinosaurs themselves is a motif for the importance of preserving nature, invoking the concept of wild life photography, of the animal in its natural habitat with the aim to evoke the idea of impending extinction—asking the viewer to question which will continue to remain: us or nature?
